These injections are associated with food remaining in your stomach for longer than usual. During an anaesthetic this food can come back up and cause choking. The risk is currently poorly understood and so caution is advisable.
Advice for patients taking weight loss injections undergoing endoscopy and colonoscopy.
Patients undergoing colonoscopy should follow the standard bowel preparation instructions.
Patients undergoing gastroscopy/upper endoscopy should maintain a liquid diet for 24 hours prior to their procedure.
Advice for patients taking weight loss injections undergoing surgery
Do not have the injection on the day of surgery.
At the current time it is not considered mandatory for you maintain a liquid diet for 24 hours prior to surgery. However, if you are able to do this without adversely affecting your diabetes then Dr Soet considers this to be preferable.
